Exams and Evaluation

There will be a written examination and a clinically oriented oral examination prior to the end of the clerkship. The written exam is the National Board Subject exam and will include material from ALL components of surgery: Critical Care & Trauma, ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic/Cardiac Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery.

Student evaluations are based on ward, assignment, conference, and examination performance as follows:

*Students who do not earn a passing grade on the written exam will receive an evaluation of “deferred”. A re-exam will be scheduled. |
Final grades are determined by multiplying your performance in each component of the grade (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4) by that parts weight (25%, 35%, or 40%). The sum of those parts is then compared to the Final Grade numbers listed, above, yielding a final grade.
Many people will evaluate each student, and the comments of a single person may be outweighed by comments of others.
Remember, if you successfully complete all clinical work as prescribed, you will get a clinical grade of PASS. Clinical grades above PASS must be earned by clinical work of high quality, not just showing up, working long hours, and participating in conferences and in the Operating Room.
